Mothers Taking Action
If you have an area of interest that
you are passionate about think about starting up your own informal
group or club and once it starts flourishing and has the support
needed to run you can move to making it a formal organization.
Here’s how:
- Think about your goals:
What do you want to focus on? You may want to broaden the scope
of the group/club and include one or two areas that impact Black
mothers.
Search out people who share your interest: Create a flyer with
content that includes your purpose and gives contact
information; send out to your email lists and any online groups
that are directed at black women and mothers
- Get the word out - Advertise!
Advertise in the local paper. Many papers offer free
advertisements for items of this nature.
- Find a place to meet.
A local recreation facility, a community center, library, or
house of worship may have a meeting room you can use for no
charge or for a small fee.
- Set up an organizational
meeting.
As you begin to hear from people, set up a time to meet.
Decide how to structure the group. Will it be a formal or an
informal gathering?
- Set up a regular schedule for
meetings.
Evaluate the circumstances of potential members. You may
want to meet weekly or monthly. Choose a time of day based on
when the most mothers can attend. Make plans and arrangements on
how to keep the children busy while the mothers are meeting have
a volunteer supervise a craft time with the kids.
Nothing in this world is comes easy, if
you feel that organizing your own group or club is right for you be
dedicated and prepared to do the work and never be afraid to ask for
help.

CNN Special: Blacks
in America
"Somebody who
saw that special will be looking at me now, thinking that I am probably
pregnant with twins for a man whose name I don’t know and looking to the
welfare system to support me because it is obvious that a black man
never would, right?!"
